How to Dispose of Gel Ice Packs

Businesses worldwide are facing sustainability challenges — and rising pressures from eco-conscious consumers and regulatory bodies. Cold chain shippers can face these pressures head-on by adopting more sustainable packaging practices.

At Pelton Shepherd, we understand the challenge of practicing sustainability while keeping shipping costs low, and we offer solutions to address this obstacle. Many of our gel packs are reusable or feature a recyclable pouch. Our TerraTemp line, in particular, was designed to provide cost-effective sustainability and low-impact disposal.

See our gel pack disposal instructions below to learn more about our refrigerants and how end users can handle them.

Glacier Ice™

Glacier Ice™ is our most economical gel pack. Its disposal can take any of the following forms:

Recycle

End users can rinse the plastic pouch and recycle it like any other plastic bag after disposing of the gel. They simply need to cut the corner of the pouch and pour the gel into the trash. Since Glacier Ice™ gel is 99.5% water, it will significantly dehydrate if landfilled.

Note that while Glacier Ice™ gel is non-toxic, it is not drain-safe and may cause a clog if poured down the drain.

Discard

End users may also dispose of the whole gel pack in their waste bin.

Reuse

You can encourage customers to reuse the Glacier Ice™ gel packs that arrive in their packages. They can rinse, clean and store Glacier Ice™ gel packs in their freezer and use them in lunch boxes or ice chests to keep perishables cold

Vortec Ice™

Vortec Ice™ features drain- and septic-safe gel, so end users can pour the gel down a household drain or flush in a toilet without clogging pipes — or sending more waste to the landfill. They can then rinse the  #4 plastic pouch and recycle it like any other plastic bag.

Recycle

End users can cut the corner of the Vortec Ice™ pouch and pour the gel down a household drain or toilet. They can then rinse the plastic pouch and recycle it with their plastic bags.

Discard

Alternatively, the whole gel pack may be disposed of in the waste bin.

Reuse

Vortec Ice™ gel packs may be rinsed clean and frozen in household freezers to be reused.

Terra Ice™

Terra Ice™ is the only gel pack certified compostable per ASTM D6400. It is designed to be disposed of in Municipal and Industrial Composting facilities. It is not optimized for home composting (It will degrade eventually but it may take a long time.)

Compost

Put the whole gel pack into your compost bin (municipal and industrial composting).

Discard

Alternatively, the whole gel pack may be disposed of in the waste bin.

Enviro Ice™

Enviro Ice™ is part of our innovative, eco-friendly TerraTemp line. It features nitrogen-based, upcyclable gel that doubles as plant fertilizer. Additionally, Enviro Ice™ underwent rigorous lab testing and is confirmed to have no impact on sinks, PVC pipes, septic tanks or municipal treatment centers.

End users have the following disposal options with Enviro Ice™:

Recycle

End users can cut the corner of the Enviro Ice™ pouch and pour the gel down a household drain or toilet. They can then rinse the plastic pouch and recycle it with their plastic bags.

Upcycle

Here’s how end users can upcycle Enviro Ice™ 32 F and use it as plant fertilizer:

  • Indoor plants: Mix 3/4 cup of Enviro Ice™ gel with a gallon of water. Apply the mixture to indoor plants every two weeks.
  • Outdoor flowers and vegetables: Mix 2 cups of Enviro Ice™ gel in a watering can with one gallon of water. Apply to outdoor plants every 7 to 14 days during the growing season.

To “feed” plants with the Enviro Ice™ 10 F formulation, end users can take these steps:

  • Indoor plants: Mix 1 teaspoon of Enviro Ice™ gel per gallon of water. Add to indoor plants every two weeks.
  • Outdoor flowers and vegetables: Mix 3 teaspoons of Enviro Ice™ gel with a gallon of water in a watering can. During the growing season, fertilize outdoor plants once every week or two.

You can help end users remedy over-fertilization by recommending they remove a thin top layer of soil and cover the remaining soil with distilled water. They can then allow it to drain and repeat four times.

Discard

Whole Enviro Ice™ gel packs may also be disposed of in the waste bin.

Reuse

End users can clean and freeze Enviro Ice™ gel packs and reuse them as they wish.

GlacierTemp Moisture Guard - Ice Packs that Prevent Moisture Damage

Glacier Moisture Guard

Glacier Moisture Guard is our sweat-proof gel pack featuring a unique, moisture-wicking pouch. End users can dispose of Glacier Moisture Guard in the following ways:

Discard

To discard Glacier Moisture Guard gel packs, end users can cut the corner of the pouch and pour the gel into the trash. They can also spread the gel outside in a pet-free area. Even though it’s non-toxic, the gel inside Glacier Moisture Guard can clog pipes if poured down the drain.

Once the gel has been removed, end users can toss the film in the trash. Whole gel packs may also be disposed of according to local and state laws.

Reuse

Glacier Moisture Guard gel packs are reusable. End users simply need to clean them before freezing and packing them with their perishables.

Glacier Ice Foam Bricks

Glacier Foam Brick

Glacier Foam Bricks retain their shape frozen or thawed, enabling tight pack-outs. Disposal options include:

Discard

End users can toss Glacier Foam Bricks in their trash bin according to local and state laws.

Reuse

If end users do not want to throw Glacier Foam Bricks away, they can rinse them off, refreeze them and pack them in coolers or lunch boxes time and time again. Glacier Foam Bricks can also be part of a send-back program to keep them out of landfills.

EcoGel - Sustainable Gel Refrigerant Ice Pack

EcoGel

EcoGel is our leak-proof ice pack. It can be disposed of using the following methods:

Recycle

EcoGel contains a semi-solid, biodegradable gel that end users can toss in the trash or place in their yard in a pet-free area. Then, they can rinse the film and recycle it with their plastic bags.

Discard

Whole EcoGel ice packs can be disposed of in a waste bin.

Reuse

End users can clean EcoGel ice packs and reuse them to keep perishables cold.
